Travel Europe by train – The fascinating Genève
Undoubtedly the paramount way to know the old continent is an option that allows you travel Europe by train during the time required to visit at least the most important urban centers. In the list you find Paris, The City of Light and the first population spot; Madrid, Barcelona, Marseille, Montpellier, Valence, Lyon and so on. Outside of Spain and France the alternatives include London, Brussels, Frankfurt, Strasbourg, Cannes, and Genève.
The last one is called the “smallest metropolis in the world” and is located close to The Alps peaks, in Switzerland. It is a French-speaking community in the bay where the Rhône leaves Lake Genève. It is known for being several international organizations home; among them the European headquarters of the United Nations (UN).
Also the Red Cross controls its philanthropic action from here. For these reasons it is named the “capital of peace” too, a beautiful venue that combines a humanitarian tradition with a cosmopolitan air that is hard to forget once you have seen it.
If you come for the first time get to know the “Jet d”Eau”, the most recognized symbol of town. It is a water stream of 140 meters high on the shore of the lake. On the right bank you will discover the greatest hotels and many restaurants. Above the left side is the original part of the city, with its shopping and commercial district. This is dominated by the St-Pierre Cathedral, though the proper center of the ancient metropolis is the Place du Bourg-de-Four, considered as the oldest square.
There are docks, riverside promenades, abundant parks, lively alleys of the old town as well as elegant shops that invite you to wander around. One of the best preserved ancient streets is the Grand-Rue, where Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born. The “Mouettes”, a kind of water taxi, take you to navigate between the coastlines. Also large boats let you embarking on cruises on Lake Leman.
